Titled "Chrome".

You can read about the features and download the browser here

http://www.google.com/chrome

I read that it was made with code from open source projects like Apple's Webkit and Mozilla's firefox.

whats different??

1. If you open task manager then you would see atleast 1 process for each TAB you open. This seems to protect from crashes in a TAB. Normally firefox would crash if you open a rouge site in a tab, the whole browser app would crash. With chrome its just the TAB that would crash.

2. Incognito window for browsing site which you do not want appear in the histroy. This is a good feature for cyber cafe's. Users can use this feature to avoid browsing history to be safe from other users.

3. You can enable google gears, this will help you with enhanced browsing experience for sites which use this feature. Gears helps the coder to interact with apps installed on your desktop. I found the sites using gear to be very user friendly but still wonder how gears helps them. Check this website to plan tasks.

https://www.rememberthemilk.com/signup/

Presumably this uses gears.

If you are worried about google intruding privacy then click on settings and turn of the feedback option.

Brocade LSAN - Concepts

LSAN is the sharing of resources across fabrics. You need a MPR or a FR4-18i blade in the 48K to be able to connect the 2 fabrics - yet keep them unmerged. Just to make it more clear, the other option to scale out, is to connect the 2 switches in either fabrics. If you do this, you are actually merging the 2 fabrics. MPR's restrict the type of RSCN's propgated, with the help of special port EX. You have to designate a port on the MPR as EX, and once u do this, although data frames can pass via the MPR, the RSCN's responsible for fabric merge are suppressed.

To share a target (ex: tape drive) in Fabric 1 in DC1 to a server (initiator) in Fabric 2 in DC2, you need to create a LSAN in both fabrics. Remember

1. LSAN's ideally should be named the same (not compulsary). Naming convention shd follow LSAN_FabricName_InitiatorName_FabricName_TargetName

In my case I will name it as
LSAN_DC1F1_STK3DRV4_DC2F2_host01

2. An LSAN should have atleast one initiator and one target. Ideally have only one initiator and one target and not more, but there is no restriction.

3. And LSAN should have the same members. If u have a 3 DC solution like I have, you will have to create seperate LSAN's to share the same resource to 2 fabrics. For ex if u want to share the tape drive to hosts in DC2-F2 and DC3-F1

LSAN_DC1F1_STK3DRV4_DC2F2_host01

LSAN_DC1F1_STK3DRV4_DC3F1_host80

I will continue with a post on howto create LSAN's and also how to troubleshoot issues in a routed fabric. If you have queries please post in the comments section. Queries on comparison with CISCO VSAN are also welcome.

Upgrading Brocade firmware on switches (not directors)

A post after a long gap, why??? Coz for a short while I worked as a consultant, and this meant I work on economics rather than technical stuff. Now that I'm back with some real technical workm you should be able to see more good stuff.

My posts on NetApps, Symantec/Veritas products and SAN troubleshooting have got good response. Thanks to readers.

So back to topic... Upgrading Brocade firmware on switches..!

I was surprised that there was'nt a simple howto on this. So here we go.

Note : My approach is to download the firmware and use it before I commit. This allows me to revert back to my old firmware if need be.

View FOS guide pg 165 for understanding the preparation for this acitivity. Steps like saving configuration, downloading new firmware, configuring FTP server etc. has been described here.

The internal process will be as follows
1. firmware -s download command is entered, and you respond to prompts.
2. Firmware is downloaded to Secondary Partition
3. Primary and Secondary boot pointers are swapped
4. CP boots from firmware in new Primary partition.

After a few days of cool operation, run the firmwareCommit command and then the new firmware is copied to the seconday partition as well.

Thats it we'll see a snapshot.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
switch:admin> firmwareDownload -s
Type of Firmware (FOS, SAS, or any application) [FOS]:
Server Name or IP Address: 192.168.32.10
Network Protocol (1-auto-select, 2-FTP, 3-SCP) [1]:
User Name: userfooFile Name: /home/userfoo/v5.3.0
Password:
*Do Auto-Commit after Reboot [Y]: n
*Reboot system after download [N]: y
Firmware is being downloaded to the switch. This step may take up to 30minutes.
Checking system settings for firmwaredownload...
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*Recommended steps. Say no to autocommit and yes to reboot after download.

Incase things dont turn out to be nice, and you get some nasty emails complaining loss of path, new storage not visible etc. Then its time to roll back.

To restore from the secondary partition, if you have not run the firmwarecommit command, this is what you run

firmwareRestore

Simple, aint it...! Atleast I would say so..! The pain is co-ordination with system admins and busniess owners, we dont have commands for these operations :)

EMC ILM Products

ILM - Information Lifecycle Management, very few companies have managed to go beyond learning the meaning of the 3 letters. Just keep in mind that you need not create this card unless the companies force you to do so.

**** LIST OF POS ****

Ahmedabad
Alankit Assignments LimitedGanesh Plaza, 1/3-, 1st FloorOpp. Navrangpur Bus Stand,Ahmedabad - 380009Ph No: - 079-40048980Contact Person: Manish JangidEmail :alankitahd@alankit.com
Bangalore
Alankit Assignments LimitedNo 42, 2nd & 4th Floor,46E , Lalbagh Main Road(Urvasi Theatre Road),Land Mark : Next to Khivraj Bajaj Showroom, Bangalore - 560027Tel no :91-80-40195733Contact person : Kalyan Basak Email :kalyan.basak@alankitonline.com
Integrated Enterprises (India) Limited 12 Ramanuja Plaza - II Floor5th Cross, MalleswaramBangalore - 560003.Tel no: 09902025630Contact Person: MR. And how is it different from a directory??

Ans : A qtree is a special subdirectory under the root volume directory.

For example if /vol/vol04nas1 is the ROOT volume directory, and a qtree training is created in it, we can refer to the qtree by traversing the following path.

/vol/vol04nas1/training

A qtree is different from the traditional directory on a Unix system in many ways including

1. A qtree can be assigned a security style. We can create a qtree with Unix, NT or mixed security style.

2. CIFS oplocks can be enabled on the qtree. CIFS oplocks help the client to buffer data locally, performing read ahead from an open file. The nature of buffering depends on the nature of oplocks granted.

3. We can set disk space & file limits at qtree level, allowing control over resource allocation to multiple projects.

Say we have 3 departments, finance, HR, sales and each function has separate qtree's. We can then assign 20 GB to sales, 100 GB to HR, since it contains training videos e.t.c. and 75 GB to finance.

How Netbackup works???

I was trying to simplify the understanding of the netbackup processes. Here's what I could manage.

On master server

bprd must be running.

ltid must be running.

Scheduled backup operations

bprd -> bpsched -> consults bpdbm to determine
1. which jobs need to be run.
2. figure out req of jobs to be run.

This is automated and is governed bu the global Wakeup interval. If bpsched finds that there is no job to be done, it quitely exits.

bpsched now starts another bpsched (lets call it bpsched-B) which is given the onus of executing the tasks.

bpsched-B also spawns multiple bpscheds, one for each task it needs to spawn.

Each of these bpsched starts a bpcd process on the media server required by the policy. The media server is determined by the storage unit.

bpcd -> bpbrm -> bptm (on media-server) -> bpcd (client) -> bpbkar to start sending data -> meta data to bpbrm ->bpdbm (update catalog)

At the same time

bptm (on media-server)
                                                  |
|
|
|
|
|
|
V
bptm (on media server) -> vmd (media to be used).
bptm (on media server) -> ltid (robotic communication, tape request).
bptm (on media server) -> tpreq

|
V
bptm (child process) -> bpbkar on client and receiving and writing out to the data buffers.

Once bpbkar stops sending out data to the bptm on the media server, it exits and the bpsched child will now communicate to its parent bpsched-B and bpsched-B will check if there are other jobs it scheduled running. If no it send a signal to the bpsched-A.

Incase there are no more jobs to be scheduled, bpsched-A exits.

References : Veritas Troubleshooting Guide and this post from Kemal Badur.

http://www.mail-archive.com/veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu/msg00520.html

Off Host SnapShot

I was just revising my VxVM fundas, since it has been quite sometime before I have actually done it. VxFS has faster recovery from unusual events like disk corruption.
2. VxFS is 8-20 % faster on database performance than UFS.
3. fsck on vxfs are 6 times faster than UFS with logging.
4. Performs better during multiprocess operations. 300% more than UFS during concurrent loads.
5. Emhanced Mount options like blkclear, closesync.
6. Administration is online, reszing, defragmentation e.t.c.

The most prominent difference is the extent based allocation thats default in vxfs as opposed to the block based allocation of UFS.

An extent is cluster of contigous blocks. Writes to extents is faster during multiple operations since more number of disks can respond. Also useful when files are large and when the fs is subjected to sequential i/o.

SFCFS – Storage Foundation Cluster File System

SFCFS is a product for sharing a single file system among multiple nodes. The HP Team installed a VA7400 at our location, connecting it directly to N class server. The armdiscover command was run and the storage was visible. My function was to confiure a SAN Fabric with Brocade switches and connect both the Storage and the N class servers to it, this was not under the Hp contract. I'am new to brocade and SAN, after the connections looked fine, ran the armdiscover command on the HP server, to my surprise did not find any storage connected. We will use the "SanSurfer CLI utilities" or "scli" for easily setting up persistent binding of LUNS to a particular HBA.

I found that configuring a Qlogic was really easy, compared to JNI and FCAW cards. But hey I never regret working on those since I learnt quite a few fundas abt SAN working on them. We created a 14 disk aggregate with 13 disks. Sounds confusing but I'll try explain

We purchased a 2 x 14 disk shelves, one disk needs to be a spare as a Best practice policy (A good point to be noted is that spares are'nt global), so effectively we had 13 disks. The Aggregate options normally recommend 6-14-28 disks. So we went ahead with 14.

This aggregate can be expanded to 28 on the fly.

Now we would be creating Flex vols out of the aggregate. Here each vol would span 13 disks thus giving better performance. The Flex vols can be resized on the fly. Caution to be excercised is that for the volume to be resized it shd be arnd 20% free.

Netapp stood upto its name of a storage appliance, just 2 hrs to complete the upgrade. No wonder its got an order of 20 Petabytes.

Veritas Layered Volumes

Layered volumes are VxVM objects made on top of other VxVM volumes. They advantage is that they offer greater
redundancy.

Examples are

1. Stripe Pro OR (Raid 1 + 0) OR stripe-mirror
2. Concat Pro

The difference is that Concat Pro is concat LV over mirrored volumes and the former being stripe LV over mirrored
volumes.

To convert from a non-layered to layered use the vxassist convert option.
Relayout works only between non-layered formats.
